Background of the study
Effective home management is a cornerstone of socio-economic stability in many communities, particularly in regions where traditional gender roles predominate. In Lafia Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, married women are increasingly turning to adult education as a means to improve their home management skills. Adult education programs provide practical knowledge in areas such as budgeting, nutrition, time management, and resource allocation, which are essential for running efficient households (Ejeh, 2023). These programs empower married women to balance domestic responsibilities with personal development and, in many cases, entrepreneurial activities. As the household is often considered the primary unit of social and economic support, improvements in home management can lead to broader community benefits, including enhanced family health, better educational outcomes for children, and increased economic productivity. Moreover, adult education fosters a sense of autonomy and self-confidence among married women, enabling them to challenge traditional norms that may limit their participation in decision-making processes within the family and the community (Ejeh, 2023). Despite these benefits, many married women in Lafia face barriers such as limited access to education, socio-cultural constraints, and financial limitations that hinder their ability to fully benefit from available programs. Additionally, the curriculum of some adult education initiatives may not be fully aligned with the practical needs of home management, leading to suboptimal outcomes. Consequently, there is a need to critically assess how adult education influences home management practices among married women in Lafia, identify existing challenges, and propose strategies to enhance the effectiveness of these programs. By focusing on this niche area, the study aims to contribute to a better understanding of the transformative potential of adult education in empowering women and improving household management. This, in turn, is expected to have a positive ripple effect on community development and socio-economic stability (Ejeh, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Married women in Lafia face numerous challenges in managing their households effectively due to limited access to targeted educational programs. Although adult education has the potential to enhance home management skills, many programs are not specifically designed to address the unique challenges faced by married women. Issues such as financial management, nutritional planning, and time allocation are often overlooked, resulting in gaps between the knowledge imparted and practical application. Furthermore, socio-cultural barriers and economic constraints limit participation in these educational initiatives. The lack of effective home management skills not only affects the well-being of the household but also has broader implications for community health and economic productivity (Ejeh, 2023). In many cases, married women are forced to rely on traditional practices that may not be efficient in addressing modern household challenges. This disconnect hampers the overall quality of life and restricts the potential for household-driven economic activities. Additionally, there is inadequate support from local government and community organizations in promoting and sustaining adult education programs tailored to home management. As a result, married women remain underprepared to manage their homes in a manner that maximizes resource utilization and promotes overall family welfare. This study aims to investigate the influence of adult education on home management among married women in Lafia, identify the barriers that limit effective learning and application, and suggest practical strategies to enhance the curriculum and delivery of these programs (Ejeh, 2023).
